UltraDNS (acquired by NeuStar) runs a high-availability, fully controllable, distributed managed Domain Name Service (DNS). Outside of UltraDNS, domain name resolution is done using a piece of public domain software that was originally developed in the 1970s, called BIND. BIND lacks the ability to control and rollback changes made to the domain name to IP address mapping, and also lacks the high availability (from 99% with BIND to 99.999% with UltraDNS) that UltraDNS provides.
